Holi festival is celebrated with much fervor across India and around the world. But Braj ki Holi (Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Nandgaon Holi) has a great importance because of Lord Krishna’s Nagri. People travel from many parts of India, especially nearby states to play Holi in Mathura-Vrindavan. In Braj Holi is played for 40 days which starts from Basant Panchami and ends on Rang Panchami. How Mathura Vrindavan Holi [Braj ki Holi] 2024 Celebrated ?

Phulera Dooj

The word Phulera means ‘Flowers’ and Dooj means ‘Second Day’. This Phulera Dooj is mostly celebrated in Braj region Mathura, Vrindavan India. It’s celebrated on the second day of Phalgun month which represents the celebration of love and bond. This day is auspicious, devotees worship Radha-Krishna on this day, offer flowers, sweets and play with flowers like Holi. And the preparation for Holi to play and rituals begins from this day.

Phulera Dooj 2024 Date and Time

Phulera Dooj starts on 12 March 2024.

Barsana [Laddoo Maar Holi – Faag Aamantran Mahotsav]

It starts with Faag Amantran Mahotsav, A devotee lady from ‘Shri Radha Rani Ladli Ji Temple, Barsana’ goes to ‘Nand Bhavan Shri Nand Baba Temple, Nandgaon’ with invitation to come and play Holi at Barsana Temple. She carries an earthen pot which has (paan ka bida, perfume, Gulal, sweets as Prasad) and gives it as an invitation. People at Nand Bhavan welcome her and accept the invitation and this Gulal is sent to all the houses of Nandgaon village to play Holi. Then on the same day, a Pandit (priest) from Nand Bhavan Temple goes to Radha Rani Temple, Barsana as an acceptance of invitation, they will come & play Holi on next day.

Devotees at ‘Radha Rani Temple, Barsana’ start the celebration with folk dances, offer Laddu to that Pandit and put Gulal on him. Devotees start dancing, Pandit gives Laddu to all devotees, throws upon them like (Laddu Holi) and devotees accept as Prasad. Must visit Radha Rani Temple during this week of Holi. This Barsana Laddu Holi falls on the 8th day of Phalgun month, which is on 17 March 2024 this year.

Lathmar Holi 2024 Barsana – Nandgaon

People, devotees from nearby villages, even from far distance come to witness & play this epic Lathmar Holi at Barsana. Ladies (Gopiya) from Barsana village use heavy sticks and hit the people (Huriyare) coming from Nandgaon village to play Holi and they use shields to protect themselves. You can join this Lathmar Holi, but take some precautions before that because it will hit very hard.

It is believed that when Lord Krishna and his friends came and put color on Radha and her friends, they used sticks to beat them. And they use shields of clothes and sticks to protect themselves. And later it became a ritual to play Holi with love.

Then on the next day from Barsana people go to Nand Bhavan, Nandgaon to play Lathmar Holi.

Barsana, Lathmar Holi – will be played on 18 March 2024 this year.

Nandgaon, Lathmar Holi – will be played on 19 March 2024.

Rangbhari Ekadashi 2024

Rangbhari Ekadashi is celebrated on the 11th day of Phalgun month. People worship Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva on this day. On thai day, Lord Shiva brings Goddess Parvati with him in Kashi for the first time. Devotees welcome them by putting color (Gulal) and worship. It’s an important day for devotees of Baba Kashi Vishwanath, worship, put color, flowers on Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati, carry Palki (idols of both on shoulders) and play Holi.

In Braj (Mathura, Vrindavan) devotees worship Lord Krishna and play Holi with Gulal, especially with Flowers in “Radhe – Krishna” Banke Bihari Ji Temple in Vrindavan, Mathura.

Rangbhari Ekadashi 2024 Date

Rangbhari Ekadashi will start from 20 March 2024.

Gokul, Chhadi Maar Holi 2024 [Wand Beating]

In Gokul, Lord Krishna is worshiped as a kid and Nathkhat Krishna enjoys teasing and playing with them. So instead of using heavy sticks, ladies of Gokul use small sticks to punish Lord Krishna and play Holi with colors. On this day devotees and ladies dress up in traditional attire carry out a procession with ‘Palki’ of Lord Krishna in the streets of Gokul. Gopiya uses sticks to beat and men use a heavy stick to protect him. It starts from ‘Nand Yashoda Bhawan, Gokul’ with offering Raj Bhoga to Lord Krishna (Thakur ji). Devotees throng to temple and play Holi and enjoy. Gokul Chhadi Maar Holi is on 21 March 2024.

Widows of Vrindavan Play Holi 2024

Breaking the old tradition, widows from various shelter homes across Vrindavan gather at the complex of “Gopinath Ji Temple, Vrindavan” to play Holi. It’s an unbelievable experience, widows playing, dancing, laughing, enjoying, throwing colors and flowers on each other. The whole year wearing the monotonous white dress with the daily challenging lives during the Holi turns into Red, Blue, Pink and deck up in petals of flowers. Must visit “Gopinath Ji Temple, Vrindavan” to play with them – widows playing Holi on 22March 2024.

Holika Dahan 2024 [Effigy Burning Ritual]

Holika Dahan (effigy burning) ritual is performed with all religious methods in Braj and all over the world. In Braj, Holika Dahan is performed on 6 March and all over India will be on 24 March 2024. In every Chowk of village, towns effigy is prepared of woods, haystack, dung cakes. On this day in the morning women dress up and worship it and in the evening during the auspicious time they burn this effigy (Holika Dahan). People wish each other Happy Holi and visit nearby houses and have delicacies.

In Falain village, Prahlad Temple, Mathura – Holi fair is held and a ritual is performed by a Pandit (Walk from the Fire) early morning around 4 AM, people gather to witness this event.

Holika Dahan 2024 Muhurat Date

Holika Dahan effigy burning time is from 6:24 PM to 8:51 PM on 24 March 2024.

Holi 2024 [Dhulandi]

Finally, Happy Holi to all. On this day, people spread color (Gulal) everywhere in Temples, houses, streets, all over the world. Some play with mud, water color, and dry Abir Gulal. People are enjoying hugging, wishing, and putting color on each other. 

On Dhulandi, in “RadhaVallabh Temple, Vrindavan” Holi is played with Curd & Turmeric.

Holi or Dhulandi will be played on 25 March 2024 all over India and in other countries as well.

Dauji ka Huranga 2024

Dauji ka Huranga will be played on the next day of Holi at “Dauji Maharaj Temple, Baldeo, Mathura”. You can visit this event but can not play because this is played by Panda family members of the village (Devar and Bhabhi). Bhabhi’s tear the shirt of their Devar and beat with it and in return Devar throws color water and Gulal on them. This Dauji ka Huranga is played around 11:00 AM, but you have to reach early around 9:00 AM to find a better place.

This Dauji ka Huranga will be played on 26 March 2024 at Dauji Temple, Baldeo, Mathura, UP.

Huranga is also played at many villages of Braj like Gidoh – Nandgaon, Bathain, Jaab, Mathura.

Most famous ‘Charkula Dance’ is performed – must visit “Mukhrai” village, Mathura – many cultural events are held on this day on 26 March 2024.

Rang Panchami [Dev Panchami] 2024

On this day Abir Gulal is offered to Radha Krishna and throws Gulal in Temples. In many states people carry out processions, dance on streets and throw Gulal / color. It’s also believed that Hindu deities (Devi-Devta) come on earth and play Holi with their devotees. Many delicacies are prepared in houses offered to God and then after people enjoy them. This Ranga Panchami is celebrated with such fervor in many states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP, Rajasthan. This year Rang Panchami is on 30 March 2024.
